The majority of robotic vacuums require maintenance. This includes emptying the bin (and sometimes rinsing it) and wiping the cameras and sensors. They also need to be connected. Many come with smartphone applications for scheduling, adjusting setting and more.

It also comes with a large battery that can clean for two hours, and return to its dock automatically when the bin is full.

We've seen this technology in action and it does a good job of moving around toys that are left scattered on the floor or furniture legs that stick out from under things. It also has a camera that snaps the Roomba back to its original position when it starts to drift from its intended location.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on carpets and hard floors. Its score on low pile carpet was excellent and it got a very good score on mid pile too. It did a great job getting rid of pet hair, however it struggled with the long and thick pet hair that was stuck together.

The Roomba 980 is still one of the most efficient robots on our list, despite these minor limitations. It's also less expensive than other top-of-the-line models. It comes with many of the features we would expect from a top model but does not have all the fancy apps or home integrations you'll find in other top models.

The iRobot Roomba is simple to set up and start running right away. After taking off the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from undercarriage, all in one vacuum and mop you have to do is plug it into its Home Base docking station or an outlet on the wall, press its large "Clean" button, and let it go to work. It will return to its dock when the battery runs out or it's stuffed with debris, and it has indicator lights on the top to indicate when the bin is full, it's time to recharge or its Wi-Fi signal is lost.
